GELDER SHIEL and Albert’s Cairn, Balmoral – Friday 3rd May 2024

Lochnagar from the bothy

Come join this festive walk out where we will walk from Crathie Car Park, to Balmoral grounds and walk to Gelder Shiel, otherwise known as Ernie’s Bothy. This undulating, relatively flat walk through the forest then out to the open offers beautiful views, including Lochnagar, which now has a topping of snow to add to the beauty.

On the return journey, and weather permitting, we will head up a narrow, steeper path to Albert’s Cairn, which was build in 1862 in memory of Prince Albert.

Although there are several other cairns in the forest, all names after members of they Royal Family, Albert’s Cairn is the most majestic, and honours the memory, life and and legacy of Prince Albert, who died on 14th December 1861, aged just 42 years old, from typhoid fever. Queen Victoria is said to have spent the rest of her life shrouded in grief.
